Ah it is that time of the year…the temps are dipping, gift guides are in full swing, Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and I am ready to cozy up in a warm sweater! When it comes to this season, turtlenecks are some of my most worn pieces. From lightweight tissue turtlenecks to thicker chunky styles, I love them all. Turtlenecks provide the perfect layering piece to create a beautiful winter outfit, and it’s no secret I have a thing for layers! Today I am highlighting five of my favorite pieces. I’m also going to share some turtleneck outfit ideas to help you put together a classic and chic look!
5 FAVORITE TURTLENECKS
You really can’t beat a great turtleneck outfit, especially during the fall and holiday season. To get started, let’s begin with the staples…my favorite turtlenecks to wear!
1. A Classic Fitted Turtleneck
At the tippy-top of my list is the Arlette turtleneck from J.McLaughlin. This timeless style is offered by this brand season after season and for good reason. I love the more fitted look, the touch of gold on the buttons, and the ribbed knit. Additionally, this sweater comes in so many incredible colors! This is the first piece that comes to my mind when thinking of a classic turtleneck.
2. A Tissue Turtleneck
Next up is a tissue turtleneck. These styles are lightweight and make great layering pieces. They are typically more of a knit style, rather than an actual sweater. This tissue turtleneck is amazing and comes in all the basic colors you need. Plus, it’s only $29, making it a great building block for creating a fall or winter turtleneck outfit!
3. A Looser Fitting Turtleneck
In addition to fitted styles, I also like to keep some more relaxed fit options in my closet. If you prefer a looser body, this soft turtleneck is the style for you. I love the elegant drop shoulders and the variety of color options. Even better, it’s cashmere and on sale, making it a steal of a deal!
4. A Chunky Turtleneck
Who doesn’t love a chunky turtleneck moment!? I certainly do! This longer chunky knit sweater is one that caught my eye this season. I recently styled it with a blazer, mini skirt, and tights for a classic fall look. But, I have also been pairing it with straight-leg denim and my favorite leggings. There are so many great turtleneck outfit ideas that can be created from a classic chunky knit sweater like this!
5. A Sheer Turtleneck
Are you more of a trendy shopper? I know this trend is not for everyone, but the sheer turtleneck is IN! Both this ruched turtleneck and this sheer dot style are recent favorites of mine – you can see how I styled it here. Plus, they are each under $59, making them great options if you’re not ready to fully invest in this trend, but you are wanting to give it a try.
Turtleneck Outfit Ideas
Okay, so now that I’ve hit on five of my favorite pieces, onto the important part…styling! Putting together a turtleneck outfit isn’t difficult. However, there are a few things I like to pay attention to including the fit, style, and layering ability of the piece. It’s also fun to play around with different bottom options. Everything from skirts and jeans to trousers and leggings can be paired with turtlenecks. Here are some of my favorite ways to style these staple pieces!
Classic Turtleneck Outfit
First up, how to create a classic turtleneck outfit. When it comes to pieces like this ribbed turtleneck or this timeless piece, I like to keep it simple. My favorite way to style these sweaters is by pairing them with a great pair of denim, classic loafers, and a chic blazer. To complete the look, I would add a heritage scarf and a great bag. Speaking of bags, I just picked up this leather tote and I can’t wait to carry it all season long!
These styles also look chic layered under a mod mini dress paired with high boots. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with how you mix and match these turtlenecks. They are extremely versatile and easy to layer under so many items that you already own in your closet!
Chunky Turtleneck Outfit
Next up, let’s tackle a turtleneck that is a bit harder to style – the chunky turtleneck. As I mentioned earlier, I love wearing this longer sweater, and I will also throw this chunky one and this cozy one into the mix!
For me, the key to creating a chunky turtleneck outfit is to always make sure the look doesn’t become too overwhelming or oversized. I love to mix the volume of a chunky sweater with the daintiness of a mini skirt, as I did with this neutral fall outfit. Another option is to pair a thicker sweater with a more streamlined bottom, such as these cropped straight-leg pants. I am also not afraid to pair a collared shirt under a turtleneck as seen here. I know this look isn’t for everyone, but personally, I love what the additional layer adds!
Sheer Turtleneck Outfit
Okay, now let’s discuss a more polarizing topic…how to create a sheer turtleneck outfit. I consider these to be dressier “date night” pieces, so I typically dress them up. HOWEVER, I have seen some incredibly chic women pull off a sheer turtleneck and jeans and I have real envy!
Personally, I would wear this sheer turtleneck back to this mini skirt, these black tights, and these embellished heels for an all-black look. This outfit would be perfect for any party, especially during the holiday season. You can actually see how the look came together here! And if I were feeling a bit more adventurous, I might dare to pair a sheer turtleneck with a fun pair of sequin pants!

Again, there is no right or wrong way to style a turtleneck. The versatility of these pieces is one of the things I love about them most! If you want to take a trip down memory lane, this turtleneck and tulle skirt look is one of my most pinned images! If I were to recreate this turtleneck outfit today, I would do it with this affordable tulle skirt and this cashmere sweater. Some of my own personal favorite turtleneck looks from the archives include this green look, this faux shearling look, and this elevated everyday look!
